Toenail Fungus Treatment

Toenail fungus is a difficult condition to treat because the fungi reside under the nail and thus become difficult to reach. The fungi are in the form of tiny microscopic organisms which are called dermatophytes. They are anaerobic organisms and they thrive in places which lack oxygen, and which are moist and warm.

Toenail fungus treatment is more effective when the infection is in the early stages. It is best to go to a chiropodist or even a medical practitioner at the first signs of an infection in the toenail, before it spreads.

Public places such as changing rooms, public showers and locker room floors may harbour germs and fungi which can cause a toenail infection. Similarly wearing the same closed shoes for several days at a stretch, which could be moist with perspiration, could be a breeding place for fungi which could affect the toenails. Injury to the toenail could also be a cause for infection.

Fungal infection of the toenails could start under the tip of the nail and gradually, over a period of months or years, if left untreated, could spread to the base and side of the nails. The nails soon become discoloured, flaky and brittle and start thickening.

There are many methods to treat toenail fungus. Simple hygiene and foot care should be maintained. The feet and toes should be dried thoroughly after washing. Closed shoes should be changed and aired regularly. Similarly, socks soaked with perspiration should be changed. Open toed sandals or slippers should be worn whenever possible to allow the feet to “breathe”.

Toenail fungal treatment could be of various types.

  • Oral medication prescribed by a medical practitioner could prevent the infection from spreading and help the growth of a healthy new nail. These take a long time to heal the infection and they may cause side effects like damage to the liver.
  • Topical medication in the form of ointments or even anti fungal nail polish is a less effective option. These are normally prescribed along with oral medicines. Since the infected nails are thick and slow-growing the doctor may have to file the nails to allow the medicine to penetrate.
  • In rare cases, the doctor may have to surgically remove the infected nail.

There are many natural ways of treating toenail infection at home:

  • Tea tree oil has anti fungal and antiseptic properties. It can be applied on the infected nail and allowed to remain for fifteen minutes. The affected nail should then be scrubbed with a nailbrush.
  • Apple cider vinegar can be mixed with warm water and used to soak the infected toenail for fifteen minutes. It should then be scrubbed dry.
  • Concentrated lime juice can be applied to the infection with a cotton ball as an effective home remedy for toenail fungus.
  • Turmeric has antiseptic properties and can be made into a paste with water and applied to the affected area and left to dry and then rinsed off.
  • Lavender oil fights infection and when mixed with tea tree oil it is an effective remedy for toenail fungal infection.
  • Another herb with antibacterial properties is oregano and it can be used effectively on the infected nail when mixed with olive oil.
  • Vitamin E oil takes time to show results on toenail infection but it helps in the growth of a healthy new nail.

There are many types of toenail fungus treatment but the most important is healthy foot care and hygiene.
