Nail Fungus Treatment
In the case of nail fungus treatment can be a little difficult and the infection may reoccur. A fungal infection of the nails is also known as onychomycosis and it is manifested in more ways than one. The nails become thickened and discoloured and there may be a build up of debris under the nail or encrusted in the sides. The fungal infection may also cause the nails to become brittle and crumbly.
Nail infections are normally caused by fungi called dermatophytes, but they can also be caused by yeast or mould. These microscopic organisms thrive in moist and warm conditions. They can cause problems for the nails if these are exposed to excessive moisture and warmth. Toenails are the most vulnerable to fungal infections because they are confined in socks and shoes which may become damp with perspiration due to the heat generated within them. Secondly they may catch the infection from damp and wet floors at public places like community showers and swimming pools. Fingernails which are overexposed to water are also susceptible to fungal infection.
As the adage goes, “prevention is better than cure”, so it is always better to prevent fungus from affecting the nails by maintaining hygiene. When the hands are constantly being used to wash dishes or clothes it is better to protect them by wearing gloves. These should be turned inside out and dried when not in use. The hands and fingers should be kept dry to prevent fungal infection in the nails. The nails should be kept well trimmed and clean and the skin around the sides of the nails should not be damaged. It is easy for infections to creep in through a small cut.
Maintaining proper foot care and keeping them dry and clean is necessary to prevent nail fungus. Foot wear should be aired and dried and also kept clean.
There are many ways to treat nail fungus after the doctor analyses the type of infection through laboratory tests. Oral medication can be prescribed to combat the infection. However these can have side effects such as damage to the liver. Topical antifungal medication in the form of creams and ointments can be applied on the affected nail and can also be used along with oral medicines, to hasten the process of healing.
Sometimes a nail lacquer can be prescribed when the infection is mild. This can be painted on and around the infected nail once a day for seven days. The piled on layers can then be cleaned with alcohol and fresh layers applied.
In extreme cases the infected nail may have to be removed surgically and a healthy nail allowed to grow.
Home remedies for nail fungus are also effective in cases of mild to moderate infection. Soaking the infected nails in warm water to which apple cider vinegar is added, for fifteen minutes and then wiping them dry can help. Tea tree oil with its anti fungal properties can be applied to the infected area. The affected nail can be scrubbed clean with coarse, ground rice flour to which a few teaspoons of apple cider vinegar could be added. A mixture of oregano and olive oil is also an effective treatment for nail fungus.
Nail fungus treatment can only be effective if the nails are kept clean, dry and well trimmed.
