Nail Fungus

Nail fungus is caused by microscopic organisms called dermatophytes which invade the nail through tiny cuts or a small separation between the nail and the nail bed. These organisms thrive in a moist and warm environment.

A fungal infection can occur in the finger nails and more commonly in the toenails. It normally begins at the tip of the nail as a white or yellow spot. If not treated in time it can spread to the base of the nail and down the sides. The infection can be stemmed in time by a chiropodist or even a medical practitioner.

A nail fungal infection is also called onychomycosis. It may cause the following symptoms and signs:

  • A thickening of the nail
  • The nail may become distorted in shape
  • The nail may become discoloured and dull
  • The nail may become brittle and crumbly
  • There is normally a build up of crumbly debris on the nail bed or at the sides of the nail

When the infection is severe the nails may even separate from the bed and this condition is known as onycholysis. A foul odour may emanate from the nail and there may be pain.

Fungal infections occur more commonly in the toenails than the finger nails as they are more exposed to moisture and warmth in closed shoes and socks. Secondly, there is diminished blood circulation to the toes rather than the fingers. Thus the body's immune system finds it more difficult to detect the infection and eliminate it.

People suffering from diabetes or those having a weakened immune system may find that nail fungal infections may cause a serious health risk. There may be permanent damage to the nails and the infection may spread. Diabetics may have a problem with blood circulation and with the nerves in the feet. They have a greater risk of serious bacterial skin infection called cellulites. So it is important for them to treat nail fungal infection as soon as possible before further complications set in.

Infections of the nail can be due to fungus, yeast, bacteria and a skin disease called psoriasis. It is important to know the cause of the infection before starting treatment.

A chiropodist or a medical practitioner will have to scrape off some of the debris under the nail and send it for analysis to a laboratory to determine the cause of the infection.

Treatment can include anti-fungal ointments, sprays or oral medicine. Home remedies are also effective for treating nail fungus especially in the early stages. Tea tree oil, lavender oil, apple cider vinegar, turmeric and other herbs have anti fungal properties and are quite effective.

It is important to prevent nail fungus by keeping the nails well trimmed and clean. Fingers and toes should be kept dry to reduce the chance of infection. Gloves can be worn to protect the nails and hands from infection when working with water. The skin around the nails should not be picked or damaged as these may be entry points for the fungus. Regular manicures and pedicures under sterilized conditions would be beneficial.

Nail fungus can spread from nail to nail so hygiene should be maintained.
